A Party and a Play at La Jolla Playhouse
Friday, February 17, 2006
MESA invited students to a social pre-party from at 6:30-7:30pm sponsored by Karl Strauss Brewery, TGI Friday's, Sammy’s Woodfire Pizza and Pat & Oscars. After students experienced the famous comical play Much Ado About Nothing starting at 8:00pm. All at a special event price of only $20 all inclusive. This was a fun social event different from the norm.

Pacific Event Productions (PEP) Tour
George Duff, President and CEO of PEP, escorted 20 MESA students on a
personalized tour through the PEP warehouse. We got a better understanding
of a production company as we toured through the linen, floral, lighting,
entertainment,
prop, and scenic departments.
After the tour we broke into team of
4 to practice our creativity in a centerpiece design contest. PEP's design team judged the contest and
Mr. Duff awarded the top three teams with PEP souvenirs. This event gave
MESA students a different perspective of the meetings and events industry.
Speed Meet
MESA's Speed Meet was a spin off of speed dating. We invited industry professionals and HTM faculty members to sit across from MESA members to talk one on one for 90 seconds then move to the next seat. Within a period of 35 minutes students had learned about 24 industry professional and professors careers in the meetings and events industry. MESA got great reviews from this quick networking event that we decided to make MESA's Speed Meet an annual event.
Job Fair 2006
This year was MESA's first year planning HTM's annual Job Fair and Career
Expo. After four months of planning it turned out to be a huge success. We
had 66 hospitality exhibitors and over 2,000 attendees including 6 local
high schools with hospitality programs. The exhibitors gave positive
feedback and complimented MESA's organization. The Job Fair was also a
success thanks to our sponsors the Unified Port of San Diego, California
Restaurant Association, San Diego State University Career Services, and
Starbucks. Channel 10 News covered the Job Fair and over 50 people showed up
to the Food Handlers Card session. This was great expose and experience for
MESA. We look forward to planning it again next year.
